Perfume Oils by La Bella Figura

Remember my La Bella Figura skin care review from last week?  Well, what I didn’t tell you is that they make perfumes.

Why did keep this from you until now?

I had totally intended to make the perfumes a part of the skin care review.  But while writing it up, I realized these little beauties deserved a spotlight all their own.

Perfumes are their own breed.  While they are considered a cosmetic product, they are decidedly different.  You use them purely for pleasure.  My problem, and I am sure many of you feel the same way, is that so many of them make me feel sick.  And this includes the nontoxic ones.  Yes, synthetic fragrance does a double whammy to the senses, but most often when I receive natural perfume samples I am just not that into them.

I knew right away that these perfume oils were going to be different.  My daughter loves beauty products as much as I do, and often gets to the sample boxes that come in first.  I had not yet checked the mail when she (who is also scent-sensitive) announced, “Mom, those perfume samples…they actually smell good!”.

She was right.  La Bella Figura has figured out how to take all natural, nontoxic ingredients (read:  no synthetic fragrances) and combine them to create truly original, soft, and lovely scents.  They do not smell fake, grassy, or sugary.   Just yummy and deep and intense – in a really good way.

Paris – I am starting with this one because it is my favorite of the three.  It has a warm, rich, vanilla-y scent, but you can also smell the lighter floral lavender and magnolia too.  Would bathe in it if I could.

Buenos Aires – This one has a pleasant, soft, almost unisex scent.  You definitely will not smell like anyone else if you wear it.

Barcelona – Fresh, light, and yummy.  You get a hit of citrus here.  This is my daughter’s top pick.

I am seriously excited about these perfume oils.  They’d make a perfect holiday gift.  Or you could get one for yourself…

Product Review :: La Bella Figura Skin Care

You know how sometimes the same thing keeps popping up on your radar?  This was the case recently with La Bella Figura, a luxury organic skin care brand I recently had the opportunity to try.

This company first came to my attention when I wrote an article on Fashion’s Night Out in September.  Next, they appeared in my Goodebox giveaway a few weeks ago.  Then (third time's a charm), Karen from La Bella Figura contacted me to see if I would be interested in doing a little product review.  It was meant to be.

I just love it when someone is super passionate about the products they create, and love it even more when I like them too.  My favorites from the La Bella Figura range just happen to be oils.  Y’all know how in love I am with oils, and this time of year they cannot be beat.   I’ve been using the Barbary Fig Renewal Serum for a couple of weeks now and my skin loves it.

Barbary Fig Seed Oil is a rare oil extracted from the seeds of the fruit of the Opuntia Ficus Indica plant. Known for its high antioxidant chemistry and used in medicine worldwide. Barbary Fig Seed Oil is a fighter of free radicals with abilities to heal damaged skin and soothe irritations rapidly. A unique and highly beneficial ingredient in anti aging treatments, it is recommended for those seeking to restore skin's health. ~La Bella Figura

Potent ingredients packed into one tiny, and very effective, punch.  A little goes along way with this type of serum, so simply dab on to your most dry/wrinkly areas and allow to soak in a bit before applying your moisturizer.

Découverte Under Eye Repair Serum is lovely too.  I like to use this one at night to give this area a healthy dose of goodness while I sleep.

Okay, now for the big guns…Rainforest Hydration Treatment.  This moisturizer is packed with, like, all of the best natural anti agers.  Buriti, marshmallow root, mango butter, olive oil, to name a few.  And the scent is divine.  That’s the jasmine talking.

I absolutely love a thick cream moisturizer like this for cooler, dry weather.  Here is how I use it:  cleanse face at night as usual, apply your regular night time moisturizer and then, just before you go to bed, gently pat a little of this treatment onto your most dry areas.  For me that is around my nose and mouth, between my eyebrows, and my neck.   It really helps to seal in moisture and protect your skin while you sleep.  Rather than waking up taut and dry, your skin is fresh and perky.  Love that!

La Bella Figura creates products with all natural/organic ingredients, no toxins or synthetics.  And they are really good at it.

Could It Be Eczema?

It is prime time for eczema to be making an appearance.  When weather cools off our skin usually becomes a little more dry.  That is normal.  If what you think is dry skin becomes red, irritated, or just won’t go away…it could be eczema.

Before you go slathering on the cortisone cream, take a look at this article I wrote for Feelgood Style on eczema and diet.  It really is worth starting there.  Here is a more in depth look at how we used diet to cure my son’s eczema.

What Does Your Daily Schedule Look Like?

What have you been up to this week?  With Halloween and all, it gets pretty crazy.  Above is a picture of my daughter (hotdog!), her cousin, and that’s our little dog at the bottom dressed as a pig.

Other than the festivities, I took the first part of the week off of writing to do an eCourse with Braid Creative on personal branding.  I heard about the course from Emily Thompson of Indie Shopography, and am soooo glad I took it.  It is info-packed, high-energy, and absolutely inspiring.  Check out my new About Me page for evidence of that.  Braid will be offering more courses throughout the winter, so be sure to get in on the goodness if you are a creative entrepreneur looking for excellent business (and some personal) advice.

The course has opened my eyes to sharing my business off line, a trickier thing for me than online, as I think it is for many women.  We like to talk about our kids, our homes, our friends, our families, what movies we saw – but not ourselves.  We need to get more comfy telling people what we are up to.  It feels good and is an important part of our business success.

One thing, amongst many, that popped onto my radar this week is that I really need a daily plan.  A … I’m gonna say it … schedule.  Something I adore about working on my own is being able to get the kids to school, then sit down in my jammies and write, or workout and then write sweaty, or maybe run a few errands and write later – I love the flexibility.  But sometimes that flexibility turns into, well, a little bit of a mess.  Not a bad mess, but a could-be-using-my-time-more-wisely sort of mess.

So, I have come up with a new schedule for my work days.  And it’s not just a regular ol’, boring schedule.  It’s a Dream Work Day Schedule.  Will it happen?  Most of the time, probably not.  But at least it is in place and gives me a framework of some type.  I will try it, see what works, make adjustments, and go from there.  It is important to note that in a Dream Work Day schedule you make sure to fit in the things that you want to do more of, not just the have tos.  Here it is:

My Dream Work Day Schedule

7 am:  Check calendar for the day, look at Twitter & email
7:15-9:  Get kids to school
9:  Workout
10:  Write
12:  Shower & Eat lunch
12:30:  Write
2:30-3:30:  Respond to emails/Twitter, set calendar for next day, read blogs I love, connect with inspiring people

This day gets in lots of time writing (my favorite!), and I’ve also scheduled in some time to remind me to connect with like-minded individuals.  Very important in maintaining that fire when you work by yourself.

What’s your daily schedule like?  Do you love it?  Want to change it?  Have any tips for the rest of us?

Forks Over Knives -- Have You Seen This Movie?

Early this week we talked about Ayurveda and rolling with the seasons.  In the post was a quote from an OBS reader on her personal experiences with Ayurveda where she noted the movie Forks Over Knives.  Well, I finally got around to watching it.  Have you seen it?

Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn have dedicated their careers (and lives) to research on the subject of whole foods plant-based diet, compared to a diet that includes meat and dairy, and its effects on health and disease.  Not always with popular results.

We have become so accustomed to thinking that we need lots and lots of protein.  That we have to have meat to be healthy and strong.  Then there is the idea of dairy being the number one way to get your adequate intake of calcium.  I did try a vegan diet and was concerned myself about calcium.

In the film Dr. Campbell shows that the body creates an acidic condition upon consumption of dairy, and this condition actually deteriorates bone density.  When you think about it, mother cows have to be lactating to produce milk, the milk their bodies are creating for their own offspring.  Who says it should be something we humans need?

This is not stuff we haven't heard before.  I know it, live it sometimes, but inevitably go back to my "normal” way of eating--for me it is not too much meat/dairy, but refined sugary junk.  Something about the way this movie presents the data and material really hits home.  I actually had tears in my eyes during parts of the movie.  For instance, the rate of obesity and diabetes in our children.  You have probably heard before that experts believe our kids may be the first generation to not outlive the lifespan of their parents.  All due to diet?  That is just wrong!  Kids eat what you put in front of them, at school, what mom makes for dinner, the selection in the cupboard or fridge at home.  Once they are a little older and can make choices for themselves, they eat what they have been trained to eat, what they are used to eating.  It is up to us, the adults in their lives, to make sure they have healthy foods to choose from and learn healthy habits at an early age.

Another area of FOK that really stood out to me was the possibility of halting or reversing cancer.  My Mom is currently going through treatment for lung cancer.  She started out with breast cancer seven years ago (which is what brought about my realization of toxins in cosmetics) which was successfully treated, only to return this year as a different cancer.  I am excited to share this info with her as she is definitely a meat/animal fats lover.

These two brilliant (not to mention extremely likable) doctors share their years of tireless and interesting research that back up their thought on this way of eating being the way to go.  They both also seem very healthy and happy "well into their 70s".

Technically this is a vegan diet, but this movement toward a whole foods plant-based way of eating is not focused on the vegan aspect per se, but the improvement of health and prevention of disease.  Honestly,  the thought of giving up my coffee creamer and chocolate isn’t very appealing.  Like anything else, this endeavor just takes a little research and experimentation.  Kind of like when you first begin using nontoxic cosmetics.  Hmmmm…

I can tell you some of the important points from eating a whole foods plant-based diet, like:

  • Marked improvement in cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar
  • Healthy weight
  • More energy
  • Reversal or prevention of heart disease and certain cancers
  • Lower health care and medication costs

But, truly, just watch it.  Forks Over Knives.  I found it on Netflix.  Buy it on Amazon.  It is inspiring to the max and a real eye opener.  The thought of being able to stop or even prevent these major diseases by simply changing the way you eat seems like a no brainer.

So, have you seen the movie?  Do you eat a whole foods plant-based diet?

Rolling with the Season

I am in between books (just finished the first two Game of Thrones and am eagerly awaiting the next season to start up) and have been re-reading Absolute Beauty by Dr. Pratima Raichur.  This book is so full of practical wisdom for skin care, but for life too.  Even if you don’t know much about Ayurveda, the concept basically boils down to a few main points:  eat for your personal constitution, try to manage stress, and live a balanced life.

Sometimes these things are easy, sometimes not so much.  But that is the essence of balance – you over, or under, do it at times, then you compensate in the other direction.  Eat too much sugar over the weekend (yes, I did that), stay away from the junk for a few days.  Skip the workouts last month?  Try to get more of them in this month.  Letting life get to you?  Take several deep breaths daily and try your best to live in the moment.

Here is a cool comment from a reader a few months back on what Ayurveda has done for her:

…Ayurveda can often times be overcomplicated and without the foundation of whole foods, exercise, breathing and hydration, the more advanced remedies are pretty useless. My foundation is really powered by two main pillars, I started my Ayruveda journey when I was looking into becoming vegan so it was kinda two for the price of one. What really inspired me nutritionally toward a whole foods diet was the movie Forks Over Knives. In fact, it was life changing and I highly recommend it.  For my exercise and breathing, I practice Iyengar yoga. This helps helps me not just with my exercise, but with my breathing too. I also highly recommend it. The focus of Iyengar yoga is to stay in a pose until you become that pose. Through practicing deep yoga poses, I have a created a lot of space and really connected with my body and breathing. It also helps me sleep better at night. And any day that I can't take a class, I just do a 15-20 minute round of poses in the morning when I wake up.
